Applications for the 2024 Richmond Tree Steward Training Course are now closed. Please consider applying for our fall 2025 class next summer. Information about becoming a Tree Steward, our expectations for volunteers, and the application are below. 

 

  • Classes will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday evenings starting on September 10th and ending on November 19th.
  • We’ll notify successful applicants by August 15th. 
  • The $160 cost for the course must be paid before the first class.

 Requirements for Becoming a Tree Steward

  • Complete the course, making up any classes you miss.
  • Over the next year, complete 20 volunteer hours working along with experienced stewards; ten of these hours must include pruning experience.  Think of this as on-the-job training.
  • To maintain certification, we require at least 15 volunteer hours each year. Five or more of the 15 hours must be Tree Steward continuing education.

2024 Tree Steward Training Classes

  • Classes will meet on the same night every week except for the weekend pruning lab. Evening classes start promptly at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the “small sanctuary” of Westover Baptist Church, 1000 Westover Hills Blvd., Richmond, VA 23225.
  • Classes will include tree biology, identification, selection, planting and pruning, as well as invasive plants, volunteer safety, tools, and more.
